War memorial plan
The proposed memorial site consists of a protected sheltered dry stonewall enclosure with an English oak as the centrepiece of the memorial. Surrounded by silver birch trees the war memorial will be a reflective, sheltered and peaceful environment.
The low level dry stone wall will have the names of the fallen carved into each stone so that the war memorial will be surrounded by the memory of those who have sacrificed there lives.
The memorial is aligned with the existing path and still allows pedestrian movement across the site. The main memorial space opens out into a circular space to allow for people to contemplate and reflect.
The densely planted silver birches surrounding the memorial will form a visual and acoustic barrier from Greenwich Way and provide a peaceful and sheltered memorial environment. Silver birch is one of the most recognised and popular trees in Britain. Its silvery white bark and drooping branches make it a very decorative tree for planting as a landscape tree.
